Summary: Ginger teaches her prince all about edible flowers and what does Darling do with them? Why, she makes a flower crown for her princess, of course.
The kitchen is her kingdom.
Ginger rules with grace and magnanimity, imagination and romance. Here the fetters of being the Candy Witch’s daughter are severed and cast away for a brighter prospect of who she can become, who she truly is. Being a Rebel has its pros and cons, which she weighed with the utmost care as if measuring ingredients, but in the end it all turned out to be the right decision.
Raven destroyed the Storybook of Legends almost a year to the date, allowing for everyone to write their own destinies as they saw fit, and because of it she gained more than just her freedom.
“Ginger, are you here?”
Bumping her head on the counter just above her, Ginger jerks herself upright to catch a glimpse of her prince sauntering through the double doors in full armor with the exception of their helm. Blood rushes to her head, and not because of the welt forming atop it, and her heart flutters at the sight.
“Oh? Was I not supposed to come in uniform?” asks Darling, frowning a little as she sets her helm aside and stride over. “I’m sorry. Fencing and General Gallantry 202 let out late today, so I had barely enough time to rush over here.”
“I’m just glad you could make it at all,” Ginger finally speaks up with a little croak, coughing into her fist afterwards to mask her embarrassment. As Darling touches her shoulder and leans over to press her lips to her temple, Ginger feels all the uneasiness melt away. “Today’s lesson is important, though. If we’re going to win the next Culinary Spell-Off, we’ll need to bring our A-Game and…What?”
Darling simply shakes her head with a wry smile. “You bumped your head on the counter again, didn’t you?”
Ginger shrinks back a little bit. “I was hoping you wouldn’t notice.”
“At least put some ice on it,” Darling walks over to the refrigerator to procure some ice cubes and a sandwich bag from the drawer adjacent to it. “I’ll hold it in place so you can continue with your lesson.”
A familiar sparkle dances in Ginger’s bright eyes as she redirects her attention to the spread before them on the counter top. “Today I’ll be teaching you about edible flowers! Not only do they make lovely decorations, but they help enhance the flavor of some desserts, too!”
Darling tilts her head some. “You can eat flowers?”
“Yes, yes,” Ginger assures her, totally in the zone now. “Some flowers with stronger scents like lavender or roses stimulate more than just your senses of sight and taste, also. It depends on the dish you’re making, but regardless, these two are always a big hit at parties.”
With a chuckle, Darling follows her girlfriend across the kitchen to where a frosted cake awaits them atop a three-tiered stand. “You’re cute when you’re excited about something,” she says softly, earning a bashful glance over the shoulder in turn. “Are we decorating this, then? That isn’t something I’m very experienced at.”
“No, but you have a great aesthetic sense and an eye for…” Ginger hums, thinking.
“Beauty?” Darling finishes for her, winking. “Sorry, but I couldn’t resist. It must be the Charming in me.”
Trying to ignore the butterflies stomping around in her belly, Ginger selects a red rose from the bowl she brought over and puts it atop the cake. “I-I always start with the topper to set the theme and mood of the dessert.”
“Could we consider a warmer palette of colors for the flowers, then?” asks Darling, moving to pluck a big, pink hibiscus from the bowl. “It is summer.”
Ginger turns the cake on its rotating platform and Darling places it exactly where she pictures it being, one in the center of each layer following the rose’s. It makes for an excellent starting point at which to branch out with smaller, daintier flowers and it’s also a real eye-catcher.
“You may be a natural at this,” Ginger says with a little smile. “I’m almost jealous.”
“No need to be,” Darling adds after placing another flower alongside hers. “I am a Jack of Many Trades, but a Master of very few. Let’s just attribute it to my being a fast learner.”
Matching that same energy, Ginger meets her around the front of the cake once more with a similar pattern of flowers. “Well, you did have a good teacher!”
“The best,” Darling agrees with a laugh afterwards. “You always were the envy of the school when it came to Home Ec.”
Ginger sighs, looking back fondly on those days. “My favorite class of all time…”
“Perhaps you’ll teach it yourself one day?” suggests Darling, keeping the conversation rolling as a means of distraction from her other activity.
“Oh, oh!” Ginger gasps, having another idea pop into her head as she adds more flowers to the cake. “We could teach at the school together! I’d teach Home Ec and you could teach Fencing and General Gallantry! Wouldn’t that be spelltastic?”
Darling smirks a little and continues quietly with her weaving. “You’re really on board with the idea.”
“We could eat lunch together and grade together! We could go to work together in the mornings and live together and – “
Ginger stops abruptly to think about the outlandish things she’s blurting out and claps a hand over her mouth after Darling giggles a little behind her. Smiling a little sheepishly, she turns to find a woven wreath of flowers in her prince’s hands.
“Of course we’ll live together.” Darling lifts the crown to place it atop Ginger’s head. “After all, what is a prince without her princess?”
Squeaking, Ginger throws her arms around Darling and squeezes her in a hug. The gentle arms encircling her are more than enough to reassure her that her destiny bodes to be a happy one. They share a bit more laughter before releasing each other and continuing to decorate the cake.
